With this kitchen, there was a furr down (was.yay!) which was removed, that made space for the additional cabinets we added above. Let's talk about that space above your cabinets for a second…that useless space that does nothing but collect dust and cause design dilemmas. Some cabinets' models have an additional upper space for a molding, and this can be useful to hide the faux ceiling and to create a faux ceiling for new cabinets.

If someone knows of a historical reason, please illuminate me in the comments.

My approach to this problem was to actually downsize to an 80″ tall cabinet, and build a base unit to bring it all the way up to the ceiling. We're remodeling our kitchen and need to install upper cabinets that are low enough to comfortably reach the shelves but high enough so that the countertop doesn't feel cramped. Leaving the cabinets 6 inches short of the ceiling is a great solution if the kitchen has a high ceiling. Incorporate work space if you don't have quite enough worktop space elsewhere, try breaking up a solid block of cabinets.
